Austrade to open its third Indonesian office in Medan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) will
\nopen its third Indonesian office Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Bruce Wallace, Australia's Jakarta-based senior trade
\ncommissioner, said yesterday that the new office, located in
\nMedan, would cover markets in Sumatra and adjacent islands.<\/p>\n
The new office would help Australian businesses tap growing
\nbusiness opportunities in Sumatra's provinces, he said.<\/p>\n
Wallace said that Medan, with its strategic location in the
\nMalaysia, Thailand and Indonesia growth triangle and its role as
\nthe major business center in Sumatra, was a logical place for the
\nnew operation.<\/p>\n
\"Located on the Malacca Straits, it represents an excellent
\nregional base for Australian business expansion,\" he said in a
\nstatement.<\/p>\n
Austrade's two other Indonesian offices are in Jakarta and
\nSurabaya.<\/p>\n
Wallace sees major opportunities in Indonesia for Australian
\nbusinesses in construction, infrastructure, telecommunications,
\nagribusiness, financial services, mining, energy and
\nenvironmental services.<\/p>\n
BHP, Australia's largest corporate entity, is currently
\ncommissioning a plant in Medan for its building products
\ndivision. Several other major Australian companies have stated
\ntheir intention to expand in the region.<\/p>\n
Medan is already a major center for Australian education
\nservices, he said.<\/p>\n
Austrade would operate in Medan in cooperation with the
\nAustralian Center and the Asean Focus Group Pty Limited.<\/p>\n
Bilateral trade between Indonesia and Australia grew by 20
\npercent in the 1996 to 1997 period to over A$5 billion.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is Australia's 10th largest trading partner and will
\nsoon be its biggest partner in the ASEAN region.<\/p>\n
Export items from Australia demonstrating significant growth
\nin the last 12 months included live cattle, cotton, aluminum and
\ndairy products, Wallace said.<\/p>\n
Significant growth in imports from Indonesia was seen in paper
\nproducts and petroleum.<\/p>\n
Australian investment in Indonesia now totals US$3 billion.
