Aussie rejects UN suggestion<\/p>\n
CANBERRA (AFP): Foreign minister Alexander Downer said Tuesday
\nAustralia was unlikely to agree to a United Nations suggestion
\nthat all oil profits from the Timor Sea should be given to East
\nTimor.<\/p>\n
Downer and Resources Minister Nick Minchin will be briefed
\nWednesday on negotiations on a new treaty for splitting oil
\nprofits.<\/p>\n
"We are still negotiating a range of issues regarding revenue-
\nsharing options," a spokesman for Downer said.<\/p>\n
Australia had agreed to split profits from the region 50-50
\nunder an agreement with Indonesia but had indicated it was
\nprepared to be more generous once East Timor became independent.<\/p>\n
The United Nations transitional administration in Dili has
\nproposed that the seabed boundaries be re-drawn to give all
\nrevenue to East Timor.<\/p>\n
The new Timor Gap Treaty is expected to be in place late this
\nyear, in time for East Timor's move to full independence.<\/p>",
