Aussie paper returns<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper is once
\nagain to be represented here after an absence of 14 years.<\/p>\n
The Sydney-based Herald reported in its July 1 edition that
\nthe Indonesian government had given permission last week for the
\ndaily newspaper to open a bureau here.<\/p>\n
\"I am delighted that the Herald is back in Jakarta,\"
\nEditor-in-Chief John Alexander was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta bureau was closed \"in controversial circumstances\"
\nin 1981, said the report. Negotiations aimed at re-establishing a
\nbureau here have been underway for six years.<\/p>\n
The Herald incurred the wrath of Indonesian government again
\nin 1986, when the newspaper ran a number of stories by senior
\njournalist David Jenkins about the business dealings of President
\nSoeharto and his family.<\/p>\n
The articles soured relations between Indonesia and Australia
\nand sparked a series of demonstrations at the Australian embassy
\nhere.<\/p>\n
The decision to allow the newspaper to return to Jakarta
\nrevives a long Herald record of coverage of Indonesia, the
\nnewspaper said.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia's relationship with Australia is growing in
\nimportance day by day. Our efforts to re-establish a bureau
\nreflect that,\" Alexander said.<\/p>\n
\"The reopened bureau will be a vital link in the Herald's
\nexpanding foreign coverage,\" he added.<\/p>\n
He paid tribute to the role of outgoing Indonesian Ambassador
\nSabam Siagian in helping the newspaper's return.<\/p>\n
Alexander said that he had chosen Louise Williams, a former
\nHerald foreign editor who has also held the posts of Asian
\naffairs editor and Southeast Asia correspondent, to be the
\nnewspaper's new Jakarta correspondent. (bsr)<\/p>",
