Aussie housing center to be built in Jakarta<\/p>\n
CANBERRA (AFP): Australia wants to build a A$500,000
\n(US$360,000) housing center as a showcase for its skills and
\nbuilding technology in Jakarta, housing minister Brian Howe said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Howe, who is also deputy prime minister, leaves today for
\nChina, Japan and Indonesia on a three-week trip during which he
\nwill discuss the proposal with his Indonesian counterpart Akbar
\nTandjung in Jakarta later this month.<\/p>\n
Also on the agenda is a memorandum of understanding on housing
\nand urban development between the two countries, which Howe hopes
\nto be ready for signing during an annual meeting of Indonesian
\nand Australian ministers here in August.<\/p>\n
The center is planned as part of a A$1 billion export drive
\nfor Australia's housing and construction industry, which has
\nalready signed lucrative deals in China, Thailand and elsewhere
\nin Asia.<\/p>\n
Recent studies have found the industry could contribute A$1
\nbillion to Australia's export revenue, creating 22,000 jobs.<\/p>\n
But it had to first accept the potential market was "broader
\nthan the limits of Australia", Howe said.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta center would be an exhibition center for
\nAustralian housing and urban activity in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
"It would be a clustering point, where we could bring
\nAustralian industry into the heart of Jakarta in a sense and
\nprovide a base for people trying to break into the market."<\/p>\n
Howe will be in Jakarta for the Australia Today Indonesia 94
\npromotion, and will open a major retail promotion of Australian
\nproducts in the Hero supermarket chain in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
In Beijing, he will sign an agreement with Chinese
\nconstruction minister Hou Jie covering joint ventures, training
\nand information exchanges on a variety of urban development
\nareas.<\/p>\n
Australian firms, although reasonably well regarded in Asia,
\nhad to show they had "a feeling for the country" and were able to
\nwork with the different cultures, Howe added.<\/p>",
