Aussie govt opens scholarship scheme<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Minister of the Australian Embassy, Leslie Rowe,
\nlaunched the Australian Government Scholarship program at a
\nfunction at the Australian Ambassador's residence in Jakarta, on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
The function was held to commemorate the opening of the
\nAustralian Development Scholarship program for the year 2000 and
\nto farewell almost 200 Indonesian fellows who will soon depart
\nfor Australia to undertake short and long-term training at
\nAustralian universities and training institutions.<\/p>\n
The Australian government this year will provide 345
\nscholarships for Indonesian citizens to undertake postgraduate
\nstudy at Masters and Ph.D level in Australian universities. The
\nprogram emphasizes gender equity and prioritize 30 percent of the
\nawards reserved for people from the eastern provinces.<\/p>\n
Rowe said that Australian government funding for training
\nprograms in fields such as economic governance, human rights, and
\nsmall and medium business development was an important aspect of
\ncommitment to supporting the reform process in Indonesia and a
\nrapid return to economic growth.<\/p>\n
There are currently 900 Indonesians studying in Australia on
\nAustralian government scholarships with annual expenditures on
\nthe program is almost A$30 million, according to a release from
\nthe embassy.<\/p>\n
Scholarships for the year 2000 intake are offered in areas of
\npriority for Indonesia's national development. This includes
\nEconomic Governance, Agriculture, Health, Environmental
\nManagement, Science, Engineering and Education & Training.<\/p>\n
Over 40 percent of the scholarships will be offered for study
\nin economic governance. Scholarships are open to both government
\nofficials and private individuals and further information as well
\nas application forms are available from the Australian
