Aussie expert proposes waterfront project<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A senior Australian urban planning expert has
\nunderlined the need for the Jakarta city administration to
\nimplement the proposed waterfront project as a means of
\nalleviating the burdens of urbanization.<\/p>\n
Speaking to The Jakarta Post Tuesday, Sonja Lyneham, the
\nprincipal of Planning Workshop International (PWI), said the
\ninflux of people into the city is so huge that the cities
\nresources had to be exploited for optimum utility.<\/p>\n
"They cannot allow this waterfront area to be under-utilized
\n-- it is an asset that has not been realized," she said.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year the City Council agreed to adopt a plan for
\nthe development of the waterfront area in North Jakarta which
\nincludes the reclamation of land from the city.<\/p>\n
The city has thus begun working closely with PWI to draw up a
\nblue print for the intended development.<\/p>\n
PWI is one of Australia's oldest and largest planning and
\nurban design companies. Based in Sydney, the company is
\nresponsible for the successful development of Darling harbor in
\nNew South Wales and the revitalization of the Kuching waterfront
\narea in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
In Jakarta the company has also been involved with the planned
\ndevelopment of the Sudirman Central Business District (CBD).<\/p>\n
The site of the waterfront was inspected on Monday by visiting
\nNew South Wales Premier John Fahey after signing a sister-
\nprovince accord with Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja.<\/p>\n
Sonja explained that the arrangement between Jakarta and New
\nSouth Wales would provide an umbrella for cooperation. This
\ncooperation would facilitate bringing in New South Wales' experts
\nfrom the government and the private sector to tackle the job.<\/p>\n
"These are not projects where you can use inexperienced
\npeople...it requires top personnel," she said.<\/p>\n
The waterfront project will involve the reclamation from the
\nsea of about 2,000 hectares of land along a 32-kilometer
\ncoastline in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The project also involves an elaborate plan which in two-
\ndecades will establish residential areas and a new CBD in the
\nSunda Kelapa area.<\/p>\n
"It is a waterfront city. ...Jakarta's waterfront should be
\nits front door, not its back door," Sonja said responding to
\ncriticism leveled against the project.<\/p>\n
She pointed out that in the future the project can, "turn the
\nwhole edge of the waterfront into a vital and interesting urban
