        "content": "<p>Aussie coal exports surge<\/p>\n<p>SYDNEY (Reuter): The Australian coal industry could increase<br>\nexports by as much as 50 percent to A$12 billion a year with<br>\nworkplace reform, Leigh Clifford, energy chief executive for Rio<br>\nTinto Ltd, said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>This might take Australia 10 or so years, but the opportunity<br>\nwas there with reform, Clifford said.<\/p>\n<p>Clifford, delivering a strong message for the need for reform<br>\nof work practices in the coal industry, held out the threat of<br>\nIndonesia as a major competitor in Asian markets.<\/p>\n<p>\"In five years or so, we will see Indonesia becoming the<br>\nworld's third largest coal exporter and the second largest<br>\nsupplier to the Asian market,\" Clifford said.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian coal was cheap to produce, closer to customers and<br>\nthe market was becoming increasingly familiar with it, Clifford<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Clifford's message, delivered at an international coal<br>\nconference in Sydney, came as Rio Tinto's 71 percent-owned Coal<br>\nand Allied Industries Ltd faces a stand-off with unionized miners<br>\nat its Hunter Valley No 1 mine.<\/p>",
