Auditor lauds Freeport<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): International auditor Montgomery Watson praised
\ngold mining company PT Freeport Indonesia for its \"exemplary\"
\nenvironmental management system at its Irian Jaya site, Freeport
\nannounced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Freeport said in a statement that Montgomery's audit described
\nits environmental management system as \"a showcase for the mining
\nindustry\", citing the company's compliance with the existing
\nenvironmental laws and regulations.<\/p>\n
It did not specify when the audit took place.<\/p>\n
Freeport has long been blamed for causing environmental
\ndegradation around its mining site in Grasberg.<\/p>\n
The audit result was announced amid reports that Freeport's
\ntailings have contaminated mollusks, a food source for local
\npeople, in the area's rivers.<\/p>\n
Montgomery recommended Freeport conduct a comprehensive
\ngroundwater study and monitoring, and increase biological
\nmonitoring of estuaries downstream of the tailings depositing
