Attorney General's office presents Towil dossier<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The South Jakarta District Court yesterday
\nreceived the dossier of Towil Heryoto, one of the four former
\nBapindo directors suspected of involvement in the Rp 1.3 trillion
\nscandal at the government-owned bank.<\/p>\n
Towil's trial promises to be even more spectacular than those
\nof the first two defendants because three former cabinet
\nministers are slated to give testimony of the extent of their
\nroles in the scandal.<\/p>\n
The three are Sudomo, former coordinating minister of
\npolitical affairs and security, J.B. Sumarlin (former finance
\nminister) and Nasrudin Sumintapura (former junior finance
\nminister). All three still hold high government posts,
\nrespectively as chairman of the Supreme Advisory Council (DPA),
\nchairman of the Supreme Audit Board and DPA member.<\/p>\n
The trial is expected to commence in mid-July.<\/p>\n
Towil's trial follows those of Eddy Tansil, the owner of the
\nGolden Key Group to whom the loans were extended, and Maman
\nSuparman, formerly deputy manager of Bapindo's Jakarta branch.
\nMaman is being tried in the same court while Tansil's case is
\nbeing heard at the Central Jakarta District Court. Both of these
\ntrials are now reaching their closing stages.<\/p>\n
Three other former Bapindo directors are still being
\nquestioned by the Attorney General's office and their dossiers
\nare expected to be presented to the court soon. They are
\nSyahrizal, Subekti Ismaun and Bambang Kuntjoro.<\/p>\n
Towil will be charged with the 1971 anti-corruption law which
\ncarries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. As the bank's
\ndirector of credit in 1989, he is believed to have played a major
\nrole in approving the loans to Tansil.<\/p>\n
Heading the government's prosecution team will be Taslim
\nHasyim while Towil has appointed Rudy Lontoh of the leading Rudy
\nLontoh and Denny Kailimang law firm to defend him.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, at Tansil's trial yesterday, the court sought to
\nestablish how much of the money had been transferred by Tansil to
\nthe personal accounts of his close relatives.<\/p>\n
But of the six relatives subpoenaed yesterday, only one,
\nbrother-in-law Na Boen Eng, turned up.<\/p>\n
Na, who is the older brother of Tansil's wife, admitted that
\nat one stage Tansil transferred Rp 1.8 billion into his personal
\naccount at Bank Umum Servitia.<\/p>\n
Na said he never bothered to ask Tansil about the source of
\nthe money since he thought that Tansil was wealthy enough to
\nafford giving away such a huge sum.<\/p>\n
The money had been returned to Tansil, he said.<\/p>\n
But chief prosecutor Lukman Bachmid pointed out that bank
\nrecords showed that Na had only returned Rp 600 million.<\/p>\n
The government has already confiscated several buildings and
\nplots of land, some of them registered under the names of
\nTansil's close relatives.<\/p>\n
The court yesterday ruled that those relatives who ignored
\ncourt subpoenas had waived all claims to the property.<\/p>\n
The prosecutors yesterday also urged the court not to be
\ninfluenced by the arrival of $16 million worth of equipment and
\nmachinery ordered by Golden Key's affiliate PT Graha Swakarsa
\nPrima from Lucky Engineering of South Korea.<\/p>\n
They said that the purchase had been financed by Bapindo's
\nletters of credit which are not part of the dossier against
\nTansil and therefore were not relevant to the case.<\/p>\n
Tansil's lawyers have asked for a court ruling to determine
\nthe ownership of the cargo, now on its way to the port of Banten
\nnear the location of Tansil's huge petrochemical project in
\nCilegon, West Java. (05)<\/p>",
