        "content": "<p>AT&amp;T secures $26.9m contract form PT Tekom<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): United States communication services firm AT&amp;T<br>\nhas won a US$26.9 million contract from state-owned PT<br>\nTelekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) to provide operation management<br>\nassistance.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement, called the Integrated Management Services (IMS)<br>\nOn-Site Support and Implementation contract, was signed here<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Under the contract, AT&amp;T, in cooperation with U.S. firm Lucent<br>\nTechnologies, will help Telkom for 16 months to develop methods<br>\nand procedures, provide operational knowledge and prepare the<br>\nhardware and software specifications being acquired from Lucent.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The collaboration will further our step toward becoming a<br>\nworld class operator by the year 2001 as stated in our TELKOM<br>\n2001 Program,&quot; Dadad Kustiwa, Telkom&apos;s Chief Operating Officer<br>\nsaid after the signing ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>2001 program<\/p>\n<p>The TELKOM 2001 program emphasizes modernization throughout<br>\nthe firm&apos;s services.<\/p>\n<p>Dadad said the program covered several aspects of running a<br>\ntelecommunications business including network planning and<br>\noperations, interconnection, tariffing and charging, fraud<br>\nprevention, product and services marketing and customer care.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was optimistic that the cooperation would increase<br>\nTelkom&apos;s network availability to 70 percent for long distance<br>\nphone calls and 80 percent for local calls.<\/p>\n<p>It will cut the processing time for new telephone connections<br>\nto three days. Now it could take as long as a year, he said.  The<br>\ncollaboration would also improve the efficiency of Telkom&apos;s<br>\nstaff, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;By 2001, we expect to have one Telkom employee to serve 200<br>\ncustomers, compared to the current ratio of one worker to 90<br>\ncustomers,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The collaboration is the second phase of the knowledge<br>\ntransfer program which began in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>Last year AT&amp;T and Lucent conducted a series of training and<br>\nassistance programs for Telkom&apos;s management.<\/p>\n<p>Dadad said his company had invested about Rp 150 billion on<br>\nhardware and software for the IMS project.<\/p>\n<p>AT&amp;T now serves over 90 million customers worldwide.  The<br>\ncompany&apos;s annual revenue exceeded US$52 billion last year.<\/p>\n<p>Lucent Technologies was formed as a result of AT&amp;T&apos;s<br>\nrestructuring and became fully independent in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Its subsidiary Lucent Technologies Network Systems Indonesia,<br>\na joint venture with PT Citra Telekomunikasi Indonesia, has<br>\nprovided Telkom with infrastructure and network technology since<br>\nits establishment in 1990.
