Atma Jaya still counting losses<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Atma Jaya University is still counting the
\nmaterial losses from two days of clashes between students and
\nsecurity officers in front of its campus on Jl. Sudirman last
\nweek.<\/p>\n
\"Forty-two students' cars, two university cars and one
\nbuilding were damaged,\" vice rector for student affairs Yohanes
\nTemalaru said on Monday.<\/p>\n
He said the university was still calculating the monetary
\namount of the losses.<\/p>\n
Violence erupted last Thursday after thousands of students
\nheld a street rally against state security bill, which had been
\napproved by the House of Representatives (DPR) earlier in the
\nday. Students decried the bill for providing excessive powers to
\nthe military.<\/p>\n
During the clashes with security personnel, many students hid
\nin the vicinity of the campus or on its grounds. Troops attempted
\nto flush out the students by releasing tear gas and shooting
\nrubber bullets into the compound.<\/p>\n
Yohanes said the administrators of the university had not
\ndecided whether to seek damages from the authorities.<\/p>\n
\"The university cars were covered by insurance and the student
\ncars were taken home by the owners,\" he said. (04)<\/p>",
