        "content": "<p>Athletic officials pushed upgrade skills<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is<br>\nseeking to spur the athletics development in southeast Asia<br>\nthrough a seminar on administrative skills, which began here on<br>\nFriday.<\/p>\n<p>The four-day seminar on the basic administration and athletics<br>\norganization is being hosted by the Regional Development Center<br>\n(RDC) Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen countries, including those from the south Asian<br>\nregion, participated in the seminar at the Century Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>The participating countries are Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam,<br>\nBhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar,<br>\nNepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are trying to instill more administrative skills for the<br>\nofficials of the athletics federations in the region as well as<br>\nequip them with proper and clear knowledge about the management<br>\nof the organization,\" Kata Farkas, IAAF's Member Services<br>\nOfficer, told The Jakarta Post after the official opening of the<br>\nseminar.<\/p>\n<p>Farkas, who was a keynote speaker along with Maurice Nicholas,<br>\nher compatriot from the Asian Athletics Association (AAA), said<br>\nthat she was very optimistic about the prospects of track and<br>\nfield development in the region.<\/p>\n<p>She called on the RDC to further step up its development<br>\nefforts in the organization of recommendable coaching clinics.<\/p>\n<p>\"Theoretically, if the RDC can organize a good coaching<br>\neducation, logically and obviously the athletic performance will<br>\nsubsequently be pushed to a higher level,\" she said.<\/p>\n<p>RDC Jakarta supervises 19 countries, leaving Afghanistan,<br>\nIndia, Laos, Pakistan, Vietnam as the only absentees from the<br>\nseminar.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has four participants in the seminar, including<br>\nTigor Tanjung, the secretary-general of the Indonesian Athletics<br>\nAssociation (PASI).<\/p>\n<p>RDC Jakarta Director Ria Lumintuarso pointed out the need to<br>\nimprove the ability in managing the organization for the benefit<br>\nof the athletics development in their respective countries.<\/p>\n<p>\"Hopefully, the participants can make the best of their<br>\npresence and apply their upgraded knowledge when they arrive back<br>\nhome,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Farkas, whose main task is to supervise all nine RDCs in the<br>\nworld, said that IAAF had allocated US$9 million annually for<br>\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n<p>The money is spent in organizing competitions, sport-specific<br>\nseminars of its own and in the promotional campaign of the sport<br>\nthrough RDCs.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar is the third clinic RDC Jakarta has hosted in four<br>\nmonths. The last two meetings were on physiotherapy and the<br>\nsteeplechase respectively.<\/p>",
