'Athletes often neglect their education'<\/p>\n
After years of waiting, the country finally has a bill on sports,
\nwhich legislators endorsed last week. The bill, which will
\nautomatically become law after one month with or without
\nPresident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's endorsement, requires the
\ngovernment to provide a pension for national athletes and
\nfinancial assistance for organizations that help develop the
\ncountry's sports industry. The Jakarta Post talked to residents
\nto get their views on the issue.<\/p>\n
Abdul Hakim, 35, is a social worker whose brother used to be a
\nnational table tennis player.<\/p>\n
It is important for the government to start making a more
\norganized effort in paying attention to athletes, especially
\nthose who are groomed since childhood.<\/p>\n
These athletes do not have a comprehensive view of their
\nfuture. Their cognitive development is limited only to their
\nphysical training. They often neglect their education, despite
\nthe many examples of forgotten retired athletes.<\/p>\n
The athletes also need to better understand the contract that
\nthey are bound to. Unless they are aware that they need better
\ninsurance and remuneration, they would most likely suffer at the
\nend of their service.<\/p>\n

Athletes should receive more than they do now since they are
\nsacrificing their future for the country.<\/p>\n
I agree that sports should be developed into an industry but
\nthere must be a clear lines between business and sportsmanship.<\/p>\n
These professional athletes should not end up commercializing
\nthemselves, therefore whoever exploits their ability must
\nappreciate them accordingly.<\/p>\n
