Athletes awarded for success and behavior<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Sports Council presented a total of
\n29 athletes from 19 sports with awards in recognition of their
\nachievements and model behavior at a ceremony held yesterday.<\/p>\n
Thomas Cup hero Hendrawan was included on the list of
\nrecipients of Satya Karya Bhakti Olahraga medals, as was fellow
\nbadminton player Deyana Lomban, who helped the Indonesian team
\nreach the Uber Cup final last May.<\/p>\n
The rising star Hendrawan, who played a major role in this
\nyear's Thomas Cup victory, added the Singapore Open title to his
\ngrowing list of achievements on Sunday by toppling world number
\none Peter Gade Christiansen of Denmark.<\/p>\n
Other noted medal recipients were national soccer team players
\nIrwansyah and Alexander Pulalo, women's middle-distance runner
\nSupriati Sutono, men's marathon runner Eduardus Nabunome, women's
\nweightlifting world champion Winarni, female swimmer Catherine
\nSurya, who was named best athlete in the 19th Southeast Asian
\nGames last year, women's diver Nani Suryani and men's spiker
\nLoudry Maspaetella.<\/p>\n
The award ceremony was held in conjunction with the 53rd
\nanniversary of Indonesian independence, which fell yesterday.<\/p>\n
A member of the council's honor board, Soraya Perucha, told
\nAntara that the selected athletes deserved recognition for their
\nachievements, personalities and dedication to their respective
\nsports.<\/p>\n
Female fencers Silvia Kristina and Sri Ayanti received medals
\nfrom the council's chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar on behalf of the
\nmodel athletes.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the award presentation ceremony, Wismoyo asked all
\nathletes to take a lesson from the never-say-die attitude for
\nwhich their forefathers who struggled for national independence
\nwere renowned.<\/p>\n
"They were exemplary figures who taught us how to cope with
\nhuge pressures and refuse to give up," Wismoyo said.<\/p>\n
He said Indonesian athletes could help heal wounds inflicted
\nby the manifold crises if they performed commendably in the Asian
\nGames in December.<\/p>\n
"This year's Asian Games is of strategic importance. We are
\ncalled upon to restore the country's wounded pride and image in
