Asylum-seekers return to Pakistan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A group of Pakistanis flew home from Indonesia on
\nTuesday after abandoning hope of starting a new life in
\nAustralia.<\/p>\n
The 19 adults and two children left Jakarta for Karachi aboard
\nan international air carrier, the International Organization for
\nMigration (IOM) said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The Pakistanis were escorted by an IOM official, the statement
\nsaid, adding that they were the largest group of Pakistanis being
\nsent home from Indonesia this year.<\/p>\n
A total of 244 Afghans and 47 Pakistanis have voluntarily left
\nIndonesia since the beginning of the IOM-sponsored repatriation
\nin May.<\/p>\n
Afghanis and Pakistanis were among thousands of asylum-seekers
\nfrom the Middle East and parts of South Asia who became stuck in
\nIndonesia as a result of aborted sea voyages to Australia
\narranged by people-smugglers.<\/p>\n
Australia has launched a tough campaign to prevent refugee-
\nladen boats from reaching its shores.<\/p>\n
The unguarded shores and largely unpatrolled waters of the
\nIndonesian archipelago have made it a popular stepping-stone for
\nasylum-seekers trying to reach Australia by boat. --AFP<\/p>",
