Astronomer gets doctorate<\/p>\n
BANDUNG, West Java: An Indonesian national, Moedji Raharto,
\nhas received his doctorate in astronomy from Tokyo University,
\nafter employing new methods to research the structure of the
\ngalaxy, it was announced over the weekend.<\/p>\n
The secretary of the astronomy department at the Bandung
\nInstitute of Technology (ITB), Hakim L. Malasan, announced at a
\npress conference that Moedji Raharto, 42, defended his
\ndissertation \"Study on the Galactic Structure based on M-type
\nStars\" before a team of Japanese astronomy professors.<\/p>\n
Based on studies from the Infrared Astronomy Satellite and a
\nsurvey of giant red stars -- observed by means of the Schmidt
\ntelescope at the Lembang-based Bosscha Observatory -- Moedji
\ncalculated the distance from the center of the galaxy to its
\neasternmost point to be approximately 21,300 light years.<\/p>\n
Moedji, the head of ITB's astronomy department, also gathered
\ninformation on the spread of giant red stars, which number an
\nestimated 38,000 in the center of the galaxy.<\/p>\n
Sitting on the team of astronomy professors examining him
\nwere Prof. J. Nakada, Prof. S. Deguchi, Prof. Sasao Miyamoto and
\nProf. DR Sadanori Okamura, Antara reported.<\/p>",
