Astro violates media law: Govt<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Ministry of Communications and Information said on
\nThursday that Malaysia's Astro All Asia Networks PLC has violated
\nthe media operations law by holding more than 20 percent in
\ndomestic cable television provider PT Direct Vision.<\/p>\n
The law states that foreign investors are not allowed to own
\nmore than a fifth of local paid television broadcasters.<\/p>\n
The ministry will consult with Indonesia's official investment
\nboard about the ownership share violation, it said in a
\nstatement.<\/p>\n
The ministry said the investment board approved the Malaysian
\nfirm's 51 percent stake purchase of Direct Vision in February
\n2005.<\/p>\n
The ministry also said that Direct Vision has violated the law
\nby using a satellite that doesn't have "landing rights" in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
It is, however, unclear if the ministry will demand the
\ninvestment board retract the approval it granted Astro. Officials
\nat the ministry were not available for clarification.<\/p>\n
