        "content": "<p>Astro blasted over Chinese shows<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AP): Malaysia's largest cable television<br>\noperator is being accused of undermining national culture by<br>\nshowing Chinese-language programs from Hong Kong and Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>Local press took up the issue on Sunday, with several papers<br>\nsuggesting that the popular satellite station Astro should<br>\noverhaul its programming to keep foreign influence out.<\/p>\n<p>The Mingguan Malaysia newspaper accused Astro of not caring<br>\nabout \"national values, culture and aspirations,\" and said that<br>\nforeign shows would distract Malaysians from more important local<br>\nissues.<\/p>\n<p>The controversy began last week, when local news media quoted<br>\ncommunity leaders and other prominent figures as saying that many<br>\nAstro shows focused excessively on the culture, politics and<br>\nentertainment of Hong Kong and Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad reportedly suggested an<br>\ninvestigation be conducted into whether these foreign shows<br>\nactually influence the people.<\/p>",
