Astra helps small businesses<\/p>\n
PADANG, West Sumatra (JP): The publicly-listed carmaker PT
\nAstra International realized its commitment to the so-called
\nJimbaran Declaration yesterday by signing partnership agreements
\nwith five small companies and cooperatives.<\/p>\n
The general manager of the Dharma Bhakti Astra Foundation,
\nKrisni Murti, said that yesterday's agreements increased the
\nnumber of companies in partnerships with Astra to 467, adding
\nthat they supply about 74 percent of the inputs needed by the
\ncompany.<\/p>\n
Many of the partnerships are in the form of subcontracts with
\nAstra,\" she said. \"We assist our partners in financing,
\nmanagement, technology and marketing.\"<\/p>\n
According to Krisni, last year's sales from the small-scale
\npartners amounted to Rp 338 billion (US$146.3 million).<\/p>\n
West Sumatra Governor Hasan Basri Durin said that Astra's move
\nis expected to be followed by the other big companies which
\nsigned the Jimbaran Declaration in Bali in August.<\/p>\n
Under the declaration approximately 100 owners of
\nconglomerates pledged to help narrow the gap between the rich and
\npoor by establishing partnerships with small businesses and
\ncooperatives.<\/p>\n
The implementation of the Jimbaran Declaration also includes
\nthe improvement of a local training center in Padang grooming
\nyoung people to become entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n
Krisni said the training center provides a realistic
\natmosphere of business activities for the trainees. (13)<\/p>",
