Assuring foreigners' safety<\/p>\n
Japanese businessmen are complaining; not about complicated
\nbureaucratic licensing procedures but about daily living comforts
\nin Jakarta. In a meeting with the National Police Deputy of
\nOperations, which was meant to be an exchange of information
\nabout business conditions, they complained about daily annoyances
\nfor which the police should take responsibility.<\/p>\n
Most of the 170 executives invited complained of having been
\nvictims of pickpockets at Blok M, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.
\nOthers complained about frequent visits, at their homes or at
\ntheir offices, from people carrying stamped documents asking for
\ndonations. Because the papers bear official stamps, they tend to
\nregard the donations as compulsory rather then voluntary.<\/p>\n
Defrauding foreigners does not only occur in Jakarta. In big
\ncities all over the world, local people take advantage of the
\nignorance of strangers by deceiving them or stealing from them.
\nThis Japanese complaint about pickpocketing at Blok M is just
\npart of the larger problem facing Jakarta -- the lack of public
\nservice.<\/p>\n
Their complaint will hopefully stimulate our police officers
\nto better safeguard security and order for both foreigners and
\nIndonesians. It should also present a challenge to Jakarta's
\nGovernor Surjadi Soedirdja, who declared Jakarta to be a \"service
\ncity\".<\/p>\n
Service and hospitality are the keys to competitiveness in the
\nfuture. At a time when technology has become available to all,
\nservice is critical to securing an advantage amid global
\ncompetition. Nations who fail to recognize the value of service
\nwill be pushed aside.<\/p>\n
Halting the perception of foreigners as easy objects for
\nextortion is a good place to start.<\/p>\n
