Many of our citizens live in harmony respecting each other
\ndespite differences in ethnicity, religion and race. But
\nconflicts still occur.<\/p>\n
I believe that differences, including marriage, should not
\ngovern our lives. But I have collided with a government
\nregulation.<\/p>\n
My parents are categorized as Indonesian citizens of foreign
\norigin. Consequently I fall into the same category. I have
\nvirtually no knowledge of my foreign origins. I only know
\nIndonesia. But with my birth certificate there is the so-called
\nK1 form which I do not find with indigenous Indonesians.<\/p>\n
Now I wish to marry an indigenous Indonesian with a religion
\ndifferent from mine. Here I also receive different treatment
\nbecause there are two institutions which register marriages
\naccording to law. I must register at the Registry Office because
\nI am a non-Moslem, while my prospective wife must report to the
\nOffice of Religious Affairs (KUA). My marriage has now been
\npostponed indefinitely.<\/p>\n
If the government had only one institution to record marriages
\nlegally, I would not have any problem. I believe many fellow
\ncitizens are experiencing the same problem.<\/p>\n
It is my wish that the differences in the treatment of
\ncitizens, both indigenous and of foreign extraction, will be
\ngradually reduced alongside the endeavors toward assimilation.<\/p>\n
