        "content": "<p>Assimilation<\/p>\n<p>From Neraca<\/p>\n<p>The problem of the indigenous and nonindigenous part of the<br>\npopulation, mainly ethnic Chinese, recently surfaced again.<\/p>\n<p>Actually nonindigenous Indonesians do not consist of ethnic<br>\nChinese only. There are ethnic Arabs, ethnic Indians, etc.. The<br>\nobvious difference in community life is that the nonindigenous<br>\npopulation -- other than the ethnic Chinese -- can more easily<br>\nintermingle and assimilate in the community, and seek to resemble<br>\nother members of the community. Many among the ethnic Chinese, on<br>\nthe other hand, have apparently not done so.<\/p>\n<p>The government does not need to give special protection to the<br>\nethnic Chinese. It would only create another difference.<\/p>\n<p>The way out of the difference is the will of the ethnic<br>\nChinese themselves to live as part of the community. The changes<br>\nto be made by the ethnic Chinese are, among other things:<\/p>\n<p>1. To intermingle\/assimilate with the community.<\/p>\n<p>2. In public places they must use the Indonesian language, not<br>\nMandarin or English.<\/p>\n<p>3. Not to live in their own groups, like housing complexes<br>\ninhabited by Chinese residents.<\/p>\n<p>4. Not to think that all matters can be settled with money<br>\nonly.<\/p>\n<p>5. To appreciate other cultures and religions. For example,<br>\nnightclub owners should not wait for government regulations in<br>\nthe fasting month or on religious holidays, to change the hours<br>\nof operations. They should take their own initiative.<\/p>\n<p>6. They do their work well without there<br>\nbeing a feeling of differences in origin.
