        "content": "<p>Jakarta \u2014 Eid always serves as a magnet attracting millions of people\nto return to their hometowns. The journey home is not merely a physical\njourney, but an emotional one involving the entire family, including\nchildren.<\/p>\n<p>However, a distressing and alarming sight can be seen throughout the\nroutes during the holiday exodus: thousands of motorcycles forced to\ncarry loads exceeding their capacity, with small children wedged amongst\npiles of luggage and the roar of roadside traffic. In response to this\nannual phenomenon, the Indonesian Transport Society (MTI) has joined\nforces with the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) to urge\nthe government to ban motorcycle travel with children during Eid\n2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMTI together with KPAI calls for a ban on motorcycle travel carrying\nchildren during Eid in 2026. This should be a matter of concern for the\ngovernment,\u201d said MTI Chairman Haris Muhammadun on Tuesday (10 March\n2026).<\/p>\n<p>The figures presented by Haris are not mere bland statistics.\nAccording to 2024 data, 76.64 per cent of traffic accidents involved\nmotorcycles. This figure serves as a stark alarm that two-wheeled\nvehicles are simply not designed for long-distance travel with excessive\nloads, especially with child passengers who have far lower physical\nendurance than adults.<\/p>\n<p>Why do motorcycles remain the preferred choice?<\/p>\n<p>Lower costs are considered the primary reason why so many travellers\nstill use motorcycles to return to their hometowns. Additionally,\npracticality plays a role. Upon arriving in their villages, these\ntravellers need mobility to visit relatives and friends.<\/p>\n<p>Public transport infrastructure in rural areas and small towns across\nIndonesia is deemed inadequate. This is what makes people feel \u201cforced\u201d\nto bring their own motorcycles from their home cities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are urging the government to gradually improve rural transport\nand transport services in districts and small towns so that people\u2019s\nmobility in their hometowns becomes easier,\u201d said Haris.<\/p>",
