Assembly to proceed smoothly: Moetojib<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Chief of the State Intelligence Coordinating
\nBody Lt. Gen. Moetojib has predicted that the People's
\nConsultative Assembly session next March will proceed smoothly,
\ndespite some irresponsible groups' attempts to disrupt it even
\nnow.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters before attending an end of year plenary
\ncabinet meeting at the State Secretariat Wednesday, Moetojib
\nexpressed confidence the government would be in full control over
\nthe political and security situation.<\/p>\n
He also warned people against the influence of certain
\n\"problematic groups\" seeking to disrupt the Assembly to further
\ntheir own political ambitions.<\/p>\n
\"We must be cautious against those who want to fish in murky
\nwaters,\" he said, echoing President Soeharto's strong warning
\nearlier last week against those seeking profit by exploiting the
\ncurrent economic turmoil.<\/p>\n
\"They want to manipulate and blow up the government's
\nshortcomings, as if the situation were very severe already,\"
\nMoetojib said. He did not elaborate on or identify the groups he
\nwas blasting.<\/p>\n
In March 1998 the Assembly will elect a new president and vice
\npresident and endorse the state policy guidelines.<\/p>\n
Analysts have noted that the current economic and political
\nsituation will remain fragile until the Assembly meeting next
\nyear.<\/p>\n
\"Ministers may hesitate to make fundamental policies now
\nbecause their terms will end in March,\" said a senior political
\nanalyst who preferred anonymity.<\/p>\n
In December last year, Moetojib predicted that the 1997
\npolitical, economic and social affairs situations would remain
\nunder control.<\/p>\n
Last year, he predicted that obstacles might also come from
\nforeign pressures on Indonesia's policy on East Timor and on the
\ncountry's human rights record.<\/p>\n
Moetojib, a former governor of the National Resilience
\nInstitute, said yesterday that so far, the irresponsible groups
\nwere still unable to provoke people into rebelling against the
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
\"They have started to 'work'. However, they have not collected
\narms. We will take action against them if they break the law,\"
\nMoetojib remarked.<\/p>\n
When journalists pressed him to identify the groups, Moetojib
\nsaid: \"There are a lot of problematic groups who continue
\n(exaggerating the national situation). There are also extremist
\ngroups who do not want Pancasila as our state ideology, but want
\nto establish a state based on a (certain) religion.\"<\/p>\n
He acknowledged that the ongoing economic chaos might have
\nadversely affected the country's social and political condition.
\nTherefore, all government officials must work hard to bolster the
\npublic's trust in the government, he said.<\/p>\n
\"All governments in the world have shortcomings. We must be
\nunited in supporting our government, because when we are united,
\nwe will be able to resolve any problem,\" he said. (prb)<\/p>",
