Assembly to have nine political groupings<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The newly established People's Consultative
\nAssembly will involve at least nine political groupings, with six
\nminor parties agreeing to coalesce into one faction.<\/p>\n
Six parties which met the electoral threshold of 10 seats in
\nthe House of Representatives confirmed on Friday they would avoid
\ncoalitions and form their own factions.<\/p>\n
They are the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI
\nPerjuangan), Golkar Party, the United Development Party (PPP),
\nthe National Awakening Party (PKB), the National Mandate Party
\n(PAN) and the Crescent Star Party (PBB).<\/p>\n
The 38 appointed representatives of the Indonesian Military
\n(TNI) and National Police and the 65 interest group
\nrepresentatives will mingle in their respective factions.<\/p>\n
In the past, the Assembly was composed of three factions
\nrepresenting three political parties, plus the Armed Forces, as
\nthe TNI was then known, and regional representatives factions.<\/p>\n
Justice Party (PK) chairman Nur Machmudi Ismail said the
\ncoalition of minor parties would consist of his party, the Muslim
\nCommunity Awakening Party (PKU), the Justice and Unity Party
\n(PKP), the Love the Nation Democratic Party (PDKB), the Nadhlatul
\nUmmat Party (PNU) and the Indonesian United Islam Party 1905
\n(PSII-1905).<\/p>\n
He said the minor parties had been determined to join forces.<\/p>\n
\"We don't care too much about the name of the faction. The
\nmost important thing is that we have all agreed to team up,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
It remained unclear whether the coalition would eventually
\ninclude other minor parties in the Assembly, including the United
\nParty (PP), the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI), the Indonesian
\nUnity in Diversity Party (PBI), the Indonesian Nationalist Party
\nFront Marhaen (PNI-FM), the Indonesian Nationalist Party-Marhaen
\n(PNI-M), the Democratic Catholic Party (PKD) and the Independence
\nVanguard Party (IPKI).<\/p>\n
The Assembly will announce the lineup of factions on Saturday.<\/p>\n
According to the House's newly ratified internal rules, a
\nfaction must have 10 representatives to exercise its legislative
\nrights.<\/p>\n
Golkar deputy chairman Agung Laksono said the 135 regional
\nrepresentatives would not form a separate faction because they
\nwere elected by provincial legislative councils. In the past,
\nregional representatives were appointed by their respective
\nprovincial administrations and legislative councils.<\/p>\n
Although they formed a faction, regional representatives, as
\nwell as the military faction, rubber stamped the policies of the
\nruling Golkar in the past.<\/p>\n
Golkar, meanwhile, has named Marzuki Darusman to lead the
\nparty's faction in the Assembly and Syamsul Mu'arif to head its
\nfaction in the House.<\/p>\n
PDI Perjuangan deputy chairman Dimyati Hartono said his party
\nappointed Sutjipto and Soetardjo Soerjogoeritno to lead the
\nparty's factions in the Assembly and House, respectively.<\/p>\n
PAN has named A.M. Luthfi and Hatta Radjasa to chair the
\nparty's factions in the Assembly and House, respectively, while
\nPPP has appointed Tosari Wijaya to chair the party's faction in
\nthe Assembly and Husni Thamrin to lead its faction in the House.<\/p>\n
PKB secretary-general Muhaimin Iskandar said he would lead the
\nPKB faction in the House and Yusuf Mukron would lead the party's
\nfaction in the Assembly.<\/p>\n
PBB named M.S. Ka'ban to lead its faction in the new Assembly
\nand Ahmad Soemargono to chair its faction in the House. (rms)<\/p>",
