Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - CNBC Indonesia hosted the EV Transition in\nMining Industry Outlook 2026 with the theme \u201cThe Future of EVs in the\nMining Industry: Between Efficiency and High Investment\u201d, which will\ndiscuss opportunities, challenges, and the industry\u2019s readiness in\nadopting electric vehicle (EV) technology.<\/p>\n
The Supervisory Board of the Indonesia Mining Association (IMA),\nRaden Sukhyar, at the EV Transition in Mining Industry Outlook 2026,\nassured the mining sector\u2019s commitment to utilising electric vehicles or\nEVs.<\/p>\n
Currently, several mines have begun trials of using trucks to mining\nbuses and mineral transport lorries. These EVs provide benefits in\nsaving fuel and reducing carbon emissions, but there are still several\nchallenges related to high EV import taxes and regulatory\nimprovements.<\/p>\n
Amid global geopolitical turmoil and rising oil prices,\nelectrification is described by the Executive Director of the Indonesian\nCoal Mining Association (APBI), Gita Mahyarani, as a relevant policy for\nthe industry, including the mining sector. However, production pressures\non coal with the slashing of the 2026 Work Plan and Budget (RKAB) will\nmake investments in EVs for coal mines a challenge.<\/p>\n
From the nickel side, the use of EVs in nickel mines still faces\nchallenges related to limited energy infrastructure and adequate road\naccess. The Supervisory Board of the Indonesian Nickel Miners\nAssociation (APNI), Djoko Widajatno, also stated that challenges\nregarding the capacity and capabilities of mining human resources in\nutilising EVs must be a concern.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the use of EVs in mining services businesses is said by\nthe Deputy General Chairman I of the Indonesian Mining Services\nAssociation (ASPINDO), Ahmad Kharis, to be closely related to mining\ncontractors\u2019 investments. Therefore, it is important to ensure\ngovernment support regarding high EV import taxes and certainty of\nmining concessions.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Director of Prevention of Environmental Impacts of\nRegional and Sectoral Policies at the Ministry of Environment and\nForestry (KLH), Widhi Handoyo, stated that KLH in the energy transition\nsector ensures that environmental functions and ecosystems remain\nprotected.<\/p>\n
From the government, the Director of the Agricultural Machinery and\nEquipment Industry at the Ministry of Industry (IPMP Kemenperin),\nSolehan, mentioned mining as a strategic sector in driving the economy\nas well as EV development, although mining transportation faces\nchallenges with heavy terrain, high activity intensity, and remote\nareas, thus requiring high unit reliability.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Industry, in supporting the EV transition in mining,\nacts as a regulator as well as a facilitator in converting Internal\nCombustion Engines (ICE) to Electric Vehicles (EV) while strengthening\nthe EV ecosystem to be competitive.<\/p>\n
In supporting the acceleration of the mining energy transition\nthrough EVs, the Product Support Director of PT Gaya Makmur Tractors,\nSurateman, mentioned the commitment of the Gaya Makmur Group in\nproviding mining vehicles such as EV-based trucks, one of which is a\n110-tonne class truck with a 1.7 Megawatt-hour (MWh) battery capacity to\nmining equipment.<\/p>\n
