        "content": "<p>Asia's CFOs pessimistic about economy: Survey<\/p>\n<p>Agence France-Presse, Singapore<\/p>\n<p>Company chief financial officers (CFOs) in Asia are more<br>\npessimistic about the short-term prospects for the global economy<br>\nthan their counterparts in Europe and the United States, a<br>\nregional survey showed.<\/p>\n<p>The survey by CFO Asia magazine, which is published monthly by<br>\nthe Economist Group, said 94 percent of CFOs in Asia \"are<br>\npessimistic about the global economy\". It did not give<br>\npercentages for the European and American executives.<\/p>\n<p>\"The trend started with the first signs Western consumers<br>\nmight be cutting back on their spending,\" said Carla Rapoport,<br>\nCFO Asia managing editor.<\/p>\n<p>\"Now, the blow dealt to the already weakening global economy<br>\nby the September 11 (terrorist) attacks in the U.S. has sent CFOs<br>\ninto a survival mode,\" she said.<\/p>\n<p>About 22 percent of Asian CFOs also cited increasing<br>\ncompetition as a \"major concern\" and nearly 50 percent of them<br>\nsaid they plan to spend more in the coming year to make them more<br>\ncompetitive, said the statement received here at the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>More than 50 percent of Asian CFOs said they expect profit to<br>\nbe down by more than 10 percent coming quarter and 85 percent<br>\nwere either concerned or pessimistic about the regional economy<br>\nnext year, it added.<\/p>\n<p>However, more than 85 percent said they were optimistic in the<br>\nlonger term, according to the survey which did not give details<br>\nof the number of respondents involved.<\/p>",
