"summary": "Asian-Pacific stock markets experienced volatility at the opening of trading on Monday, 20 April 2026, as investors cautiously monitored escalating tensions in the Middle East following the US Navy's seizure of an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman and President Donald Trump's threats to destroy Iran's power plants and bridges if demands are not met. This incident, which followed Iran's attack on a commercial vessel attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz, has prompted Iran to cancel scheduled negotiations in Islamabad, citing the US naval blockade as a violation of the ceasefire. While US indices like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq hit record highs on Friday, mixed performances across Asian bourses underscore the global markets' sensitivity to geopolitical risks in key oil transit routes.",
