Asian movie stars get awards<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (AFP): Hollywood-based Hong Kong movie director John
\nWoo and four other Asian movie celebrities have been conferred
\nawards here for their contribution to the regional cinema
\nindustry, officials said Friday.<\/p>\n
Woo, who has more than two dozen feature films to his credit
\nand shot to international fame with his stylized gangster epics
\nin the 1980's, received the "lifetime achievement in filmmaking"
\naward at the CineAsia movie convention.<\/p>\n
Two other award winners from Hong Kong were Raymond Chow,
\nchairman of Golden Harvest Entertainment, who received the
\n"lifetime achievement" award and veteran actress Josephine Siao,
\nhonored for "excellence in acting."<\/p>\n
Indonesia's Benny Suherman and his partner, Sudwikatmono, of
\nthe Subentra Group were joint winners of the "exhibitors of the
\nyear" award.<\/p>\n
"The awards were given in recognition of outstanding
\ncontributions to various aspects of the movie industry in this
\npart of the world," Robert Sunshine, managing director of
\nCineAsia, said in a statement.<\/p>\n
London-based Andrew Cripps of United International Pictures
\nreceived the "distributor of the year" award.<\/p>\n
The annual CineAsia convention brought together top executives
\nof the motion picture industry, whose latest technologies and
\nservices were on show. Discussions were also held on efforts to
\nimprove film distribution and exhibition in Asia.<\/p>",
