        "content": "<p>Asian governments to spend more on IT<\/p>\n<p>Agence France-Presse, Singapore<\/p>\n<p>Governments in the Asia-Pacific region will invest more to<br>\nembrace the benefits of information technology, with China seen<br>\nspending the most, an industry monitor said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>International Data Corp. (IDC) said of the five governments it<br>\nhas profiled, China is projected to increase spending at a<br>\ncompounded annual growth rate of nearly 40 percent from 2001 to<br>\n2003.<\/p>\n<p>Spending on keeping governments wired electronically is<br>\nexpected to increase by more than 20 percent in Singapore and<br>\nSouth Korea during the same period, and by 15 and 13 percent<br>\nrespectively in Australia and Hong Kong, IDC said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;By embracing technology, governments are finding they can<br>\nreap the same type of rewards as e-businesses,&quot; said Lisa<br>\nShishido, a senior analyst on e-business and e-government with<br>\nIDC.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;These rewards include more efficient processes, improved<br>\npublic services and cost savings, allowing government to do more<br>\nwith less -- all of which lead to greater satisfaction with<br>\ngovernment,&quot; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Governments were still in the &quot;primary stages&quot; of getting<br>\ntheir operations online.<\/p>\n<p>Most of them have a &quot;narrow focus on providing electronic<br>\nservices and achieving agency-by-agency operational efficiency --<br>\nwithout considering the benefits they can achieve by approaching<br>\nit as an e-business transformation,&quot; Shishido said.<\/p>\n<p>The projected government spending should create business<br>\nopportunities for IT vendors and service providers, IDC said.<\/p>",
