        "content": "<p>Asian executives want Soeharto prosecuted<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (AP): Most Asian executives responding to their poll<br>\nsaid former Indonesian President Soeharto and his family should<br>\nbe prosecuted for corruption, two regional media organizations<br>\nsaid yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Three-quarters of the respondents to the survey of 350<br>\nexecutives from 10 Asian countries said they felt Soeharto and<br>\nhis family should be tried for graft.<\/p>\n<p>The poll, using questionnaires returned by fax, was conducted<br>\nby satellite television station CNBC Asia Business News and<br>\nregional news magazine Far Eastern Economic Review shortly after<br>\nAsia's longest ruling leader resigned last week.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents were chairmen, managing directors and other top<br>\nexecutives of companies in Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia,<br>\nJapan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan<br>\nand Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a majority of top executives favoring prosecution, 80<br>\npercent of those surveyed in Indonesia did not feel the former<br>\nIndonesian leader or his family should face trial, and 78.5<br>\npercent of all respondents said they don't expect such legal<br>\naction to actually take place.<\/p>\n<p>The poll also showed 64.5 percent believing Indonesia should<br>\nabandon its policy of Dwifungsi (dual function), which gives the<br>\nmilitary a constitutional role in both political and defense<br>\ndecisions, though the majority of Indonesian respondents say the<br>\npolicy should stay.<\/p>\n<p>If the opposition were elected to power in elections promised<br>\nsoon by new President B.J. Habibie, 54.9 percent of those polled<br>\nsay it would not be a credible alternative to the long-ruling<br>\nGolkar Party, while 87.3 percent feel any such elections would<br>\nnot be free and fair.<\/p>\n<p>No margin of error was given.<\/p>\n<p>The Far Eastern Economic Review is wholly owned by Dow Jones<br>\nand Company, which manages a number of prominent newspapers,<br>\nmagazines and news agencies.
