Asian cultures plugged on TV<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (DPA): The Association of Southeast Asian Nations
\n(ASEAN) may set up a satellite television channel to showcase the
\nregion's cultures, reports in Singapore said yesterday.<\/p>\n
ASEAN representatives will discuss the idea at the ASEAN
\nInformation Ministers meeting in Bangkok in July, a Singapore
\nofficial said.<\/p>\n
The satellite channel would be part of an ASEAN drive to
\n\"exploit broadcasting and information technologies to promote an
\nawareness of our cultures cost effectively\", Singapore's deputy
\nsecretary for information and the arts, Choo Whatt Bin, said in
\nan interview with the Straits Times newspaper.<\/p>\n
\"If the ministers are all keen and anxious to have the
\nsatellite channel up, it can be done quite quickly,\" Chew said.<\/p>\n
\"The programs are all ready. You just need to rent a
\ntransponder and take them from the national broadcasters\" in each
\ncountry, Choo explained.<\/p>",
