        "content": "<p>Asian coffee demand up, says German research<\/p>\n<p>HAMBURG (Reuter): Weak coffee demand in Asia was getting fresh<br>\nimpetus from instant coffee products and canned coffee drinks,<br>\nGerman coffee association DKV said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Growth in cold coffee drinks was seen in Japan, South Korea<br>\nand Thailand, according to information received by the<br>\nassociation and published in its quarterly report.<\/p>\n<p>Sales of soluble coffee products were seen rising on the<br>\nmarketing of multinational companies.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Per-capita consumption is still very low but on the<br>\nincrease,&quot; DKV said, but it could not offer forecasts.<\/p>\n<p>Consumption in China with 1.25 billion inhabitants was dormant<br>\nbut instant coffees were being introduced and roasted coffee was<br>\nnow produced in Shanghai, DKV said.<\/p>\n<p>China is a net exporter of coffee from southern provinces.<\/p>\n<p>Asian countries produce 18-20 percent of the world coffee<br>\ncrop, mostly robustas from Indonesia, Vietnam, India and<br>\nThailand, but they account for just 10 percent of coffee<br>\nconsumption.<\/p>\n<p>Japan leads annual per-capita consumption in the region with<br>\n3.11 kg but Germany&apos;s comparable figure is 6.9 kg.<\/p>",
