Asian coffee demand up, says German research<\/p>\n
HAMBURG (Reuter): Weak coffee demand in Asia was getting fresh
\nimpetus from instant coffee products and canned coffee drinks,
\nGerman coffee association DKV said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Growth in cold coffee drinks was seen in Japan, South Korea
\nand Thailand, according to information received by the
\nassociation and published in its quarterly report.<\/p>\n
Sales of soluble coffee products were seen rising on the
\nmarketing of multinational companies.<\/p>\n
"Per-capita consumption is still very low but on the
\nincrease," DKV said, but it could not offer forecasts.<\/p>\n
Consumption in China with 1.25 billion inhabitants was dormant
\nbut instant coffees were being introduced and roasted coffee was
\nnow produced in Shanghai, DKV said.<\/p>\n
China is a net exporter of coffee from southern provinces.<\/p>\n
Asian countries produce 18-20 percent of the world coffee
\ncrop, mostly robustas from Indonesia, Vietnam, India and
\nThailand, but they account for just 10 percent of coffee
\nconsumption.<\/p>\n
Japan leads annual per-capita consumption in the region with
\n3.11 kg but Germany's comparable figure is 6.9 kg.<\/p>",
