        "content": "<p>Asiad contingent still short of cash<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's Asian Games contingent organizers<br>\nexpressed relief yesterday on hearing about the team's free<br>\nflight to Thailand, but doubted they had enough money to cover<br>\nother expenses.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy head of the National Sports Council's athletes<br>\ndevelopment body, Muhammad Hindarto, said yesterday that the free<br>\nflight on a military cargo aircraft would reduce the<br>\ntransportation expenses from US$523,000 to only $75,000.<\/p>\n<p>\"We greatly appreciate the government's help which is very<br>\nmeaningful now that we are gearing up for the Asian Games amid<br>\nfinancial shortages,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>\"But unfortunately there are still many more financial matters<br>\nto solve,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>State Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Agung Laksono said<br>\nTuesday that Minister of Defense\/Armed Forces Commander Gen.<br>\nWiranto had agreed to provide an Air Force Hercules cargo<br>\naircraft to transport 200 Indonesian athletes and officials to<br>\nand from Bangkok for the Asiad in December.<\/p>\n<p>Agung also promised to seek Minister of Finance Fuad<br>\nBawazier's approval to exempt the Indonesian contingent from<br>\npaying departure tax. The government imposes a Rp 1 million tax<br>\non all residents leaving the country by air.<\/p>\n<p>Hindarto said that the plane would also carry sports equipment<br>\nalong with the estimated 159 athletes who will be competing in 21<br>\nevents,<\/p>\n<p>In addition to transportation expenses are pocket money and<br>\naccommodation expenses for both athletes and officials. These are<br>\nexpected to total almost $330,000, according to Hindarto.<\/p>\n<p>\"We cannot afford to provide the daily expenses now because we<br>\nare using all our money to finance the ongoing training<br>\nprograms,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hindarto said half of the training expenses budget would be<br>\ncovered by sports bodies whose athletes are now being groomed for<br>\nthe Asiad.<\/p>\n<p>The sports council has announced that the 13th Asian Games<br>\nwill cost Indonesia at least Rp 15 billion. The government has<br>\nallocated Rp 3 billion from the state budget to help the national<br>\nteam prepare for the quadrennial event. (emf)<\/p>",
