Asia not ready for Y2K bug<\/p>\n
TOKYO (Reuters): Asia Pacific nations and regions are falling
\nbehind schedule in preparations to deal with the year 2000
\ncomputer millennium bug, the Japan External Trade Organization
\n(JETRO) said in a report on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The report was based on a survey of public and private sectors
\nin Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, South Korea,
\nthe Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand conducted in
\nAugust and September.<\/p>\n
The report said that the survey showed that preparations have
\nsignificantly progressed compared with a similar survey taken in
\nFebruary, but \"steps to update infrastructure and complete other
\nY2K measures appear to be behind schedule in many cases.\"<\/p>\n
The survey found that financial and utility sectors were best
\nprepared to deal with millennium computer problems, while
\nhospitals, other medical facilities and unlisted private firms
\nwere the least prepared.<\/p>\n
An increasing number of financial firms were considering
\nsuspending operations over the New Year holiday, while some
\nairline companies are considering canceling or rescheduling
\nflights during the date changeover, the report said.<\/p>",
