However, the available options are severely\nlimited.<\/p>\n<p>According to Reuters, the conflict that erupted following Israeli and\nAmerican attacks on Iran has directly driven a surge in global energy\nprices and increased inflation risks across many Asian countries.<\/p>\n<p>Supply disruptions from the Middle East have prompted refineries\nacross various nations, from China to Southeast Asia, to seek supplies\nfrom other regions despite significantly higher transportation costs and\ndelivery times.<\/p>\n<p>Several nations have even taken emergency measures to protect\ndomestic supply. China and Thailand have halted temporary oil product\nexports, whilst Vietnam has suspended crude oil exports normally shipped\nto Australia. These steps reflect mounting pressure on the regional\nenergy supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>The principal problem lies in logistics. Oil from West Africa or the\nAmericas requires 1.5 to 2 months to reach China. Purchase contracts\nmust even be arranged approximately three months before delivery. By\ncomparison, oil from the Middle East passing through the Strait of\nHormuz typically arrives in China within approximately 25 days. This\ndistance differential directly impacts transportation costs and supply\nflexibility.<\/p>\n<p>Another constraint stems from crude oil characteristics. Refineries\nacross Asia have been designed over decades to process medium-sour crude\nfrom the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>When crude types are switched, refinery operating parameters must be\naltered, including oil fraction separation points and petrol blend\ncomposition. Refineries in that nation are\nlargely ageing and specifically designed for Middle Eastern crude.<\/p>\n<p>According to Kpler analyst Muyu Xu, Japanese refinery operators can\nblend light crude such as WTI or West African oil with heavy American\ncrude to approximate Middle Eastern crude characteristics, although such\noperations carry technical and logistical risks.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, China maintains a more diversified supplier profile.\nApproximately half its oil imports originate from the Middle East,\nincluding Iran, which has been a major supplier. China also purchases\noil from Russia despite Western sanctions. Its strategic reserves are\nestimated sufficient for approximately 78 days of consumption.<\/p>\n<p>India occupies a more vulnerable position. The nation\u2019s oil reserves\namount to only approximately 25 days, whilst 55% of its oil imports\noriginate from the Middle East. In the current conflict situation, India\nhas begun seeking alternative supplies after the United States\ngovernment granted a one-month waiver to continue purchasing Russian\noil.<\/p>\n<p>Supply disruptions have also spread to the liquefied natural gas\n(LNG) market. Qatar, the world\u2019s second-largest LNG producer, has halted\nproduction owing to conflict. The impact is rapidly felt in Asia. India\nhas begun restricting gas supply to industrial customers due to supply\nconstraints.<\/p>\n<p>Michal Meidan, energy researcher at Oxford Institute for Energy\nStudies, believes this situation could drive long-term shifts in energy\nmix composition. South Asian nations will likely reduce gas\u2019s share in\ntheir energy systems and increase coal and renewable energy usage,\nfollowing the strategy already implemented by China.<\/p>\n<p>Should supply disruptions persist for an extended period, Asia\u2019s\nenergy policy direction could change fundamentally.
