        "content": "<p>ASEAN's policy on Myanmar<\/p>\n<p>John Sweeney of the London Observer maintains his reputation<br>\nas one of the finest print journalists of his generation in the<br>\nexcellent article printed by The Jakarta Post under the title<br>\nMyanmar claims war on drugs but protects barons.<\/p>\n<p>This excellent investigative piece once more raises critical<br>\nquestions about ASEAN's policy of so-called constructive<br>\nengagement with the Myanmar junta. If, as Sweeney proves,<br>\nSingapore is being used as a laundering base for the major<br>\nMyanmar drug baron Lo, then ASEAN's policy is not only hollow,<br>\nbut a palpable front for the most serious criminality.<\/p>\n<p>And, if, as Sweeney alleges, identifiable figures in the<br>\nMyanmar military have supervised the torture of Myanmar drugs<br>\ntrade whistle-blowers, this policy also aids and abets the<br>\ngrossest human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p>When is ASEAN going to wake up to these facts?<\/p>\n<p>DAVID JARDINE<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta<\/p>",
