        "content": "<p>ASEAN told to boost democracy<\/p>\n<p>DENVER, Colorado (Reuter): The world&apos;s leading industrial<br>\ncountries urged on Saturday southeast Asian nations which<br>\nrecently accepted Myanmar into the ASEAN economic group to<br>\npressure Yangon&apos;s military rulers to restore democracy.<\/p>\n<p>A report by the Group of Seven (G-7) foreign ministers,<br>\nmeeting here with Russia&apos;s foreign minister, also made a direct<br>\ncall to the military to start a &quot;meaningful, political dialog&quot;<br>\nwith the democratic opposition.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Concerned by the continuing violations of human rights by the<br>\nregime (in Myanmar), we call on the SLORC (State Law and Order<br>\nRestoration Council) to enter into a meaningful political dialog<br>\nwith leaders of the democratic opposition and ethnic minorities<br>\naimed at national reconciliation and the restoration of<br>\ndemocracy,&quot; the report said.<\/p>\n<p>The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which groups<br>\nBrunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand<br>\nand Vietnam, decided to admit Myanmar next month.<\/p>\n<p>The G-7 also said the international community held the SLORC<br>\naccountable for the safety of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi,<br>\nwho has spent much of the last eight years under house arrest.<\/p>",
