        "content": "<p>ASEAN to sign IT pact<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (AFP): ASEAN leaders are to sign an \"e-ASEAN<br>\nframework agreement\" during their Singapore summit this week, to<br>\nlink their electronic information systems, a Singapore trade<br>\nministry statement said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The e-ASEAN agreement, which has been under development since<br>\n1998, is seen as setting up a \"free trade area for goods,<br>\nservices and investments for the information-communications<br>\nindustries\" the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement, to be signed by the leaders of the 10-member<br>\nAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Friday was a<br>\nsign of \"ASEAN's commitment to face the challenges posed by the<br>\nnew economy.\"<\/p>\n<p>ASEAN economic ministers who completed a draft of the e-ASEAN<br>\nagreement in October have called on member countries to<br>\n\"accelerate the implementation of the agreement by 2002\" if they<br>\ncan.<\/p>",
