        "content": "<p>ASEAN seeks Spratly guarantees<\/p>\n<p>KUNMING, China (AFP): China's smaller neighbors are expected<br>\nto seek reassurances over a long-standing South China Sea<br>\nterritorial dispute as meetings between ASEAN and China begin<br>\nhere on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes amid nervousness in the region over a<br>\ndiplomatic row between Beijing and Manila over Chinese structures<br>\non a coral reef just 135 nautical miles from the Philippine<br>\nisland of Palawan.<\/p>\n<p>Senior officials of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations<br>\nwill ask China to sign a regional code of conduct in a move to<br>\ncheck alleged expansion in the Spratly Islands.<\/p>\n<p>The code will spell out guidelines governing activities in the<br>\ndisputed chain, Philippines' foreign undersecretary Lauro Baja<br>\ntold reporters in mid-March.<\/p>\n<p>China, Taiwan and four of the eight ASEAN nations -- Brunei,<br>\nMalaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam -- all partially or wholly<br>\nclaim the Spratlys, a group of reefs, islands and shoals which<br>\nlie along strategic shipping lines and are believed to harbor<br>\nrich oil reserves.<\/p>",
