        "content": "<p>ASEAN promotes telecoms<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK (AFP): Six countries of Southeast Asia have agreed to<br>\npool their efforts -- and money -- to better compete in the world<br>\ntelecommunications market, a Thai official said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will invest<br>\nUS$1.4 million this year to set up two companies to handle<br>\nfinancing and seek new contracts for state-run firms, the<br>\nCommunications Authority of Thailand official said.<\/p>\n<p>The companies, ASEAN Telecom Holding Co. and ASEANNet Co.,<br>\nwill take a three percent fee for contracts and then pay out<br>\ndividends to the governments, technically the shareholders, the<br>\nofficial said.<\/p>\n<p>The members had not chosen a start-up date for the companies,<br>\nthe official added.<\/p>\n<p>ASEAN groups Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines,<br>\nSingapore and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>Thai officials declined to provide further details.<\/p>",
