ASEAN plans on pollution control<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): The Association of Southeast Asian Nations
\n(ASEAN) opened talks here yesterday on cross-border pollution
\ncontrols after being plagued in recent years by hazy skies and
\npolluted seas.<\/p>\n
\"ASEAN member countries are fully aware that a unified,
\nconcerted and coordinated action is very much needed to enhance
\nthe effectiveness of each member country's capability to combat
\nsuch pollution,\" said Law Hieng Ding, Malaysia's minister of
\nscience, technology and environment.<\/p>\n
ASEAN groups Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the
\nPhilippines and Brunei. Their environmental experts will meet for
\nfour days with counterparts from Australia, Canada, Denmark,
\nJapan, New Zealand and the United States to develop a regional
\npollution plan, officials said.<\/p>\n
Law said the developed countries would provide technical
\nexpertise and financial aid to deal with environmental disasters.
\nLast year, thick smoke and haze caused by forest fires in
\nIndonesia blanketed Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Thailand,
\ncausing a marked increase in respiratory problems.<\/p>",
