ASEAN was established 30 years ago with the economy, rather
\nthan security, as its keystone.<\/p>\n
Therefore, ASEAN should be more ready to act when member
\ncountries are facing economic disasters such as a decline in
\nvalue of the currency. It should also be warding off the negative
\nimpact of speculators.<\/p>\n
Perhaps ASEAN's preoccupation with political matters has left
\nit out of touch with economic matters, leaving the region
\nvulnerable to economic upheaval.<\/p>\n
When there was a sudden attack by foreign currency
\nspeculators, ASEAN leaders panicked and their reaction was slow.
\nWhile they were investigating political motives or seeking out
\nthe culprits, rates of exchange in the region dropped sharply.
\nThis reduces or even eliminates ASEAN's achievements so far.<\/p>\n
It is perhaps time to review whether ASEAN is adhering to its
\nmain objectives of economic stability and welfare for its member
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
In order to stabilize the economy of the region it is
\nnecessary to understand the upheavals and shortcomings in the
\neconomy. To know exactly who your friends and foes are is
\nimportant too. So, if there is a sudden attack, we will find
\nASEAN ready to fight.<\/p>\n
