        "content": "<p>ASEAN, Japan propose reform initiative<\/p>\n<p>NEW YORK (Dow Jones): Foreign ministers of the Association of<br>\nSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN) proposed Friday that ASEAN and<br>\nJapan jointly formulate a program to improve the international<br>\nfinancial system, Japanese officials told the Kyodo news service.<\/p>\n<p>The ministers from the ASEAN nations excluding Indonesia and<br>\nBrunei made the proposal during a breakfast meeting with Japanese<br>\nForeign Minister Masahiko Komura in New York, the officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The ASEAN ministers underscored a need for Japan and the ASEAN<br>\ncountries to forge a common policy on the world&apos;s financial<br>\nsystem ahead of a series of international financial conferences<br>\nstarting next week in Washington, the officials were quoted as<br>\nsaying.<\/p>\n<p>The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank will hold a<br>\nseries of conferences in early October.<\/p>\n<p>The ASEAN ministers asked Japan to continue providing<br>\nfinancial assistance to struggling Asian economies, the officials<br>\nadded.<\/p>\n<p>The ministers also said Japan should make further efforts to<br>\nshore up its faltering economy, adding Japan has an important<br>\nrole for the recovery of ailing Asian countries.<\/p>\n<p>Komura explained to them a set of stimulus measures the<br>\nJapanese government has taken, including tax cuts.<br>\nKomura met with the ASEAN ministers on the sidelines of the U.N.<br>\nGeneral Assembly.<\/p>",
