ASEAN gains artificial: Senator<\/p>\n
PUERTO AZUL, Philippines (AFP): The industrialization achieved
\nin Southeast Asia is only \"artificial,\" and will not last,
\nPhilippine Senate President Edgardo Angara told a business
\nconference yesterday.<\/p>\n
Angara said the gains by the Association of Southeast Asian
\nNations (ASEAN) were based on \"artificial industrialization,\"
\nadding that \"this kind of industrialization does not endure.\"<\/p>\n
\"When Southeast Asia stops being attractive as a site, the
\nforeign investors move on and our indigenous economies can revert
\nto their old pre-industrialization forms,\" he told delegates at
\nthe ASEAN Business Forum.<\/p>\n
Angara said the region's industrial growth was based on
\ninnovations made outside Southeast Asia adding that \"true
\nindustrialization... means having a measure of technological
\nindependence.\"<\/p>\n
He called for greater technological and vocational training in
\nthe region as well as a \"leapfrog\" from agriculture and
\nsmokestack industries to high-technology and information-based
\nindustries.<\/p>\n
He also endorsed greater trade liberalization, including the
\ncreation of the ASEAN Free Trade Area early in the next century.
\nASEAN groups Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and
\nthe Philippines.<\/p>",
