        "content": "<p>ASEAN foreign ministers will hold a rare meeting with their Myanmar\ncounterpart in Bangkok this weekend, the Philippines said on Friday.\nThis marks the first time since the military coup in Myanmar in February\n2021 that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will hold\nan in-person meeting at the foreign minister level with the\nmajority-Buddhist nation. The Philippines, as chair of the now 11-member\nbloc, described the gathering as an \u2018informal\u2019 meeting and said it would\nbe hosted by Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow in Bangkok. The\nASEAN foreign ministers \u2018will be briefed by U Tin Maung Swe on\ndevelopments in Myanmar,\u2019 the Philippine foreign ministry said in a\nstatement. \u2018They are expected to exchange views on ASEAN\u2019s engagement\nwith Myanmar, as well as on possible concrete steps that Myanmar can\ntake to address concerns related to the cessation of violence,\nconstructive dialogue among the contending parties, and humanitarian\nassistance in Myanmar, as contained in the Five-Point Consensus (5PC),\u2019\nit added. Last month, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said\nMyanmar\u2019s newly appointed government appeared \u2018more open\u2019 to suggestions\nthan the previous regime. Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, who led the\nmilitary coup that ousted the National League for Democracy government\nin February 2021, assumed the presidency and appointed a new cabinet in\nApril. Immediately after the February 2021 coup by Myanmar\u2019s military,\nASEAN issued the 5PC. The ASEAN 5PC calls on all parties in Myanmar to\ncease violence and \u2018exercise utmost restraint.\u2019 Under the 5PC, ASEAN\nalso provides humanitarian assistance to Myanmar through the ASEAN\nCoordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management,\nwhile a special envoy is tasked with visiting Myanmar to \u2018meet with all\nparties concerned.\u2019<\/p>",
