ASEAN confident about U.S. ties<\/p>\n
MANILA (DPA): The Association of Southeast Asian Nations
\n(ASEAN) wrapped up a two-day meeting in the Philippines
\nyesterday, confident that Myanmar's entry into the regional group
\nwould not jeopardize investment ties with the United States.<\/p>\n
Melito Salazar, managing head of the Philippines' Board of
\nInvestment, said Myanmar's entry into ASEAN along with Cambodia
\nand Laos in July was expected to enhance cooperation among
\nmembers and with other countries outside the group.<\/p>\n
Salazar expressed confidence that Myanmar would institute
\nmarket reforms once it joins ASEAN, saying members were required
\nto follow all existing agreements in the group including accords
\naimed at opening up local markets for foreign trade and
\ninvestment.<\/p>\n
Western governments and international human rights groups have
\nexpressed concern about ASEAN's decision to accept Myanmar,
\nfearing it might encourage Rangoon's military junta to disregard
\nhuman rights in continuing to assert strict control over its
\npopulation.<\/p>",
