ASEAN business summit draws key players<\/p>\n

SINGAPORE (JP): Over 600 business leaders and fund managers
\nfrom ASEAN and its major trading partners will attend the
\ninaugural ASEAN business summit in Jakarta on March 12 and March
\n13.<\/p>\n
Summit organizing committee chairman Suryo Sulisto said here
\nyesterday over 100 U.S. business leaders would attend the summit.<\/p>\n
Dozens of business leaders from Europe, Australia and Japan
\nhad would also attend, he said.<\/p>\n
"Thus we hope this summit will help promote the business
\ncontacts needed to exploit trade and investment opportunities in
\nthe region," Suryo said.<\/p>\n
Several high-ranking ASEAN officials and prominent business
\nleaders would speak at the summit which President Soeharto would
\nattend, he said<\/p>\n
Speakers include Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar
\nIbrahim, Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Thai
\nDeputy Prime Minister Amnuay Viravan, Indonesian Coordinating
\nMinister for Production and Distribution Hartarto, Minister of
\nTourism, Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave and Minister of
\nIndustry and Trade Tunky Ariwibowo.<\/p>\n
Investment agency heads from the seven ASEAN members --
\nBrunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand
\nand Vietnam -- would be given opportunities to promote investment
\nin their countries.<\/p>\n
Private sector speakers will include president of the United
\nStates-based United Technology George David, Singapore Airlines
\nchairman S. Dhanabalan, Asian Development Bank president Mitsui
\nSato; and president of Malaysia's MBF Finance Berhad Loy Hean
\nHonng.<\/p>\n
Indonesian business leaders who will speak include AceS
\npresident Adi R. Adiwoso, Jakarta Stock Exchange president Cyrill
\nNoerhadi, Todung Mulya Lubis from Lubis and Associates law
\noffice, Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman
\nAburzial Bakri and Bank BNI president Widigdo Sukarman.<\/p>\n
Aburizal Bakrie, who is also ASEAN Chambers of Commerce and
\nIndustry president, said the summit would focus on the region's
\ntrade and investment opportunities.<\/p>\n
He said ASEAN had become a prominent trader and an attractive
\ninvestment site which offered unique business opportunities.<\/p>\n
ASEAN's 1995 trade was estimated at nearly US$600 billion,
\nmaking it the world's fourth largest trading region after the
\nUnited States, Japan and the European Union.<\/p>\n
In 2003, when ASEAN's free trade agreement becomes effective,
\nASEAN is expected to have a population of over 500 million
\npeople; a huge market with vast business opportunities.<\/p>\n
Aburizal said the summit would promote ASEAN business and
\ninvestment opportunities in five sectors.<\/p>\n
They are food and agriculture, automotive industry and capital
\ngoods, banking and insurance, franchises, and intellectual
\nproperty rights and legal services and infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Shortly before the summit, on March 10 and March 11, ASEAN CCI
\nwill have a council meeting in Jakarta. The meeting will discuss
\nASEAN CCI programs, food and agriculture, capital goods, and
\ntourism.<\/p>",
