        "content": "<p>ASEAN business summit draws key players<\/p>\n<p>By Riyadi<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (JP): Over 600 business leaders and fund managers<br>\nfrom ASEAN and its major trading partners will attend the<br>\ninaugural ASEAN business summit in Jakarta on March 12 and March<br>\n13.<\/p>\n<p>Summit organizing committee chairman Suryo Sulisto said here<br>\nyesterday over 100 U.S. business leaders would attend the summit.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of business leaders from Europe, Australia and Japan<br>\nhad would also attend, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Thus we hope this summit will help promote the business<br>\ncontacts needed to exploit trade and investment opportunities in<br>\nthe region,&quot; Suryo said.<\/p>\n<p>Several high-ranking ASEAN officials and prominent business<br>\nleaders would speak at the summit which President Soeharto would<br>\nattend, he said<\/p>\n<p>Speakers include Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar<br>\nIbrahim, Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Thai<br>\nDeputy Prime Minister Amnuay Viravan, Indonesian Coordinating<br>\nMinister for Production and Distribution Hartarto, Minister of<br>\nTourism, Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave and Minister of<br>\nIndustry and Trade Tunky Ariwibowo.<\/p>\n<p>Investment agency heads from the seven ASEAN members --<br>\nBrunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand<br>\nand Vietnam -- would be given opportunities to promote investment<br>\nin their countries.<\/p>\n<p>Private sector speakers will include president of the United<br>\nStates-based United Technology George David, Singapore Airlines<br>\nchairman S. Dhanabalan, Asian Development Bank president Mitsui<br>\nSato; and president of Malaysia&apos;s MBF Finance Berhad Loy Hean<br>\nHonng.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian business leaders who will speak include AceS<br>\npresident Adi R. Adiwoso, Jakarta Stock Exchange president Cyrill<br>\nNoerhadi, Todung Mulya Lubis from Lubis and Associates law<br>\noffice, Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman<br>\nAburzial Bakri and Bank BNI president Widigdo Sukarman.<\/p>\n<p>Aburizal Bakrie, who is also ASEAN Chambers of Commerce and<br>\nIndustry president, said the summit would focus on the region&apos;s<br>\ntrade and investment opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>He said ASEAN had become a prominent trader and an attractive<br>\ninvestment site which offered unique business opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>ASEAN&apos;s 1995 trade was estimated at nearly US$600 billion,<br>\nmaking it the world&apos;s fourth largest trading region after the<br>\nUnited States, Japan and the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>In 2003, when ASEAN&apos;s free trade agreement becomes effective,<br>\nASEAN is expected to have a population of over 500 million<br>\npeople; a huge market with vast business opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Aburizal said the summit would promote ASEAN business and<br>\ninvestment opportunities in five sectors.<\/p>\n<p>They are food and agriculture, automotive industry and capital<br>\ngoods, banking and insurance, franchises, and intellectual<br>\nproperty rights and legal services and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before the summit, on March 10 and March 11, ASEAN CCI<br>\nwill have a council meeting in Jakarta. The meeting will discuss<br>\nASEAN CCI programs, food and agriculture, capital goods, and<br>\ntourism.<\/p>",
