ASEAN against EU policy<\/p>\n
MANILA (AFP): ASEAN members are backing the Philippines in its
\ncampaign against an European Union (EU) directive that could
\nforce up the cost of importing and exporting food products, the
\npresidential palace said yesterday.<\/p>\n
In addition to the support of the Association of Southeast
\nAsian Nations (ASEAN) members, three EU members are also
\nsympathetic to Manila's battle against the order.<\/p>\n
The statement said ASEAN had conveyed a joint diplomatic note
\nto the Commission of the European Communities expressing "very
\ndeep concern" over the new policy.<\/p>\n
It also said France, Britain and Germany were also
\n"sympathetic to the Philippine efforts" against the new policy
\nwhich will for the first time require foodstuffs to be shipped in
\ncontainers especially dedicated for food.<\/p>\n
The Philippines and other ASEAN countries have said the move
\nwill increase their costs and "destabilize global productivity to
\nthe particular detriment of producer developing nations."<\/p>\n
The palace said that the EU policy will also hurt other
\nmembers of ASEAN which includes Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia,
\nSingapore, Thailand and Vietnam as well as the Philippines.<\/p>",
