State-owned ferry operator PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry is exploring\nstrategic opportunities to strengthen connectivity between Indonesia and\nMalaysia through the geographical proximity of Batam and Johor. The\ninitiative focuses on developing a Roll-on\/Roll-off (RoRo) service\nlinking Bintang 99 Persada Port in Batam with Tanjung Belungkor Ferry\nTerminal in Johor, a corridor spanning approximately 27 nautical miles.\nThis route is strategically positioned to support more integrated\nmovement of passengers, vehicles, and cargo.<\/p>\n
ASDP Director of Operations and Transformation, Rio Lasse, stated\nthat preparations and coordination with stakeholders are ongoing. The\nservice is targeted to commence operations by mid-2027, subject to\ninfrastructure readiness, regulatory compliance, and approval from both\nthe Indonesian and Malaysian governments. \u2018We hope the Batam\u2013Johor RoRo\nservice can begin operations by the middle of next year. However, its\nrealisation requires readiness and collaboration from all parties,\nparticularly regarding regulations, infrastructure, and the alignment of\ncross-border processes between the two countries,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
While port facilities at Bintang 99 Persada in Batam are already\navailable, the terminal in Tanjung Belungkor still requires upgrades to\nsupport the planned RoRo operations. The RoRo model offers a more\nstraightforward logistics process, as vehicles and their cargo can drive\ndirectly onto the vessel, be transported by sea, and then drive off at\nthe destination port. This approach has the potential to reduce cargo\nhandling, shorten service times, and improve the efficiency of\ncross-border supply chains.<\/p>\n
ASDP noted that the Batam\u2013Johor corridor is supported by high\nmobility between the two areas, with data recording around 193,000\nMalaysian tourists visiting Batam throughout 2024. Batam also holds\npotential for various export commodities, including animal and vegetable\nproducts, cocoa, and chemicals.
